Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations at Gotham Avenue School

Gotham Avenue School is bursting with color, creativity and culture as it celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. From Sept. 15-Oct. 15, scholars across all grade levels are immersing themselves into the rich histories, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities, all while connecting with cherished characters and stories.
The youngest scholars, from Pre-K to second grade, are contributing to a “Wall of Sonrisas (Smiles),” which will feature cultural symbols, butterflies, marigolds, or stars and fireworks. In third grade, scholars are celebrating their identity and heritage by creating artwork with their family flags.
Fourth graders are creating colorful, paper Talavera tiles to decorate a hallway mural. Meanwhile, fifth grade scholars are stepping into the role of movie producers and storytellers, crafting pitches for animated films set in Hispanic or Latino countries or even rooted in their own cultural backgrounds. Sixth graders are creating decorative luminarias, which will surround a candle centerpiece that symbolizes the theme of “Light Up Gotham.”
“Through these activities, our students are learning about the richness of Hispanic culture while also celebrating creativity and community spirit in a way that ties into their interests,” Assistant Principal Kimberly Farina said.
To conclude the monthlong celebration, the entire school community will come together for a joyful, flavor-filled potluck on Oct. 15. Families are invited to submit their favorite recipes into a cookbook, “Sabor y Amor (Flavor and Love),” which they will prepare and share for the potluck.
