Covert Avenue School Sixth Graders Create Instruments to Perform Original Rhythms

Covert Avenue School’s sixth grade scholars stepped into the roles of composers and instrument designers throughout the month of December, collaborating with music teacher Sheryl Turk on an immersive, project-based learning experience. This project challenged students to apply musical concepts through both composition and construction.
Sixth graders composed original rhythm patterns and engineered one-of-a-kind musical instruments to bring their compositions to life. Using everyday materials such as cardboard, gumballs, water bottles and string, the scholars explored how sound is produced through vibration, tension and resonance.
During their culminating presentations, scholars explained how and why each instrument design produced sound. They then performed their original rhythm patterns, demonstrating both musical understanding and creative problem-solving. This hands-on project fostered critical thinking and an appreciation for the mechanics of music.
“Each class has shown imagination and amazing composing abilities. Bravo to our sixth grade students!” Ms. Turk said.
