Sixth Graders Learn Life-Saving Skills During Heart Health CPR Assemblies

District sixth graders gained valuable, life-saving skills during Heart Health CPR assemblies held in collaboration with Mount Sinai South Nassau Community Education team and the American Heart Association of Long Island.
In November, the district received a generous donation from the American Heart Association, which included six CPR in Schools with First Aid Training Kits and six AED trainers. These resources enhance the district’s emergency preparedness and support comprehensive, hands-on life-saving training for both students and staff.
During five assemblies held on Jan. 20 and Jan. 27, sixth graders learned the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, what an AED is and why calling 911 should always be the first step in an emergency. Following the presentation, scholars demonstrated curiosity and critical thinking by posing thoughtful questions that deepened their understanding of the material.
Guided by members of the Mount Sinai South Nassau Community Education team and staff from the American Heart Association of Long Island, students practiced hands-only CPR using mannequins. A curated playlist of songs with the proper beats per minute played throughout the gymnasium, helping students maintain the correct rhythm while performing CPR.
Through these resources and learning experiences, the district hopes to empower students and staff to act with confidence and clarity in emergencies, ultimately saving lives and nurturing a school community grounded in preparedness, care and responsibility.
