FIRST Lego League Challenge

For the first time this year, all six of our schools sent robotics teams to compete in FIRST Lego League Challenge, held last month at Mineola High School.
To prepare for the competition, our teams designed and programmed Lego robots. They also completed an Innovation Project, researching and presenting information on a topic related to this year’s archaeological-inspired theme, “Unearthed.”
Participating in this Lego League Challenge provided our fourth, fifth and sixth grade robotics club students with a valuable, real-world, problem-solving experience. It helped them develop coding and design skills, while also building teamwork and presentation skills.
This experience will prepare our Elmont students to participate in robotics and STEM activities in high school, and may even inspire some of our students to pursue future careers in science, technology or engineering.
The district is pleased to announce that two schools won awards at the competition.
Dutch Broadway School won first place in the Robot Design Category, an award that recognizes the team that uses outstanding programming principles and solid engineering practices to develop a robot that is mechanically sound, durable, efficient and highly capable of performing challenging missions.
Stewart Manor School won second place in the Robot Performance Category, an award given to the teams that achieve the highest scores during the robot performance competition. This award also qualified the Stewart Manor team to move on to the Championship Round, which will be held in Hicksville on March 8.
Congratulations to all our Elmont Lego robotics teams! We are very proud of you and look forward to continued excellence in programming, research and robotics.
