Covert Avenue School hosts annual Vocabulary Carnival and Literacy Day

Fun and learning came together in a lively celebration of literacy, as Covert Avenue School scholars in grades K-3 showcased their word skills at the annual Vocabulary Carnival and Literacy Day on March 13.
The gymnasium buzzed with energy as scholars moved from station to station, tackling a variety of interactive, grade-level challenges designed to strengthen vocabulary across subjects including ELA, math, science and social studies. Classic carnival games like bowling and fishing were paired with literacy-focused questions. Kindergartners practiced building sentences with consonant-vowel-consonant words, while second graders explored antonyms and synonyms and worked on their “Word of the Week” vocabulary words.
After the carnival, families were invited to join students in their classrooms for hands-on literacy activities led by teachers. Families learned about the five pillars of literacy and discovered practical ways to support their child’s reading, writing, vocabulary and comprehension at home. Following the brief presentation, students and their special guests created literacy-themed crafts or enjoyed fun activities like Mad Libs.
The Vocabulary Carnival and Literacy Day was part of the school’s two-week Pick a Reading Partner celebration, which featured themed dress-up days, mystery readers and engaging activities designed to make reading exciting and enjoyable for all students.
