District Honors Beloved Community Officer and Highlights STEAM Initiative During April Board Meeting

During the board of education meeting on April 14, the District was proud to host several meaningful presentations that reflected the heart and excellence of the community and its schools.
The family of fallen Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa, as well as her colleagues from the 5thPrecinct, were the meeting’s honored guests. Officer Espinosa, who tragically passed in January, devoted many years to serving the Elmont community and school district.
“Her passing has left a profound void in our community,” Superintendent of Schools Marlon Small said during his opening remarks. “She was more than just a member of law enforcement; she was a trusted presence in our schools and our neighborhoods. A source of safety, compassion and guidance for our students and families. She carried out her duties with professionalism and heart, always placing the well-being of our students and our community at the center of her work.”
The Stewart Manor School chorus paid tribute to Officer Espinosa with a beautiful rendition of “Lean on Me,” under the guidance of music teacher Aidan Timko. Students from all six buildings created handmade cards and heartfelt tokens of appreciation, which they proudly presented to her family.
Mr. Small and Board President Tiffany Capers presented Officer Espinosa’s family with an Excellence in Community Service Award, posthumously honoring her. The award recognized a life devoted to selfless service, integrity and unwavering commitment to the Elmont community.
Following the dedication to Officer Espinosa, the district highlighted its impressive STEAM initiatives and programs. Scholars from each school building shared information on the new OHM BOCES Science curriculum, New York State-mandated science labs, the STEAM enrichment classes, Lego Robotics and Science Research Club.
“As you can see, our Elmont students have many, many opportunities to experiment, to engage, enhance on experiences across the discipline of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Director of Curriculum and Instruction Pamela Stamidis said. “Our district has embraced these new initiatives, and will continue to do so, as we ensure that our students are very prepared to be successful learners and responsible citizens in our ever-changing world.”
