Dutch Broadway School Fifth Graders Engage in Future Scholars Program

Dutch Broadway School is currently piloting a new program for fifth graders called Future Scholars. During the course of eight sessions, guided by Dr. Amina K. Gordon, a community parent and the CEO and founder of Cultural Confidence Consultant, students in Mrs. O’Brien and Mr. Savarino’s class are exploring her book College Pathways: Building Your Future Through Community Wealth.
Through interactive discussions and activities, students are learning how their cultural wealth, family histories, languages, identities and dreams are all valuable academic strengths that can support their future success.
Each week focuses on a different theme, including Foundations, Language and Voice, Heritage and History, Strengths and Affirmation, and Future and College. The program is designed to introduce students to college and career conversations at an early age, helping them build confidence, envision their futures, and better understand opportunities such as higher education, scholarships and career pathways.
As part of the program, students participate in reflective and community-centered activities that encourage personal growth and connection. Scholars maintain a Daily Scholar Habits tracker, with prompts throughout the week such as “Write down one thing a family member said that you want to remember,” and “Tell one person something you are grateful for. Write what they said back.” Students are also tasked with interviewing a “community hero” to gain perspective and learn from the experiences of others.
Scholars were also provided with a family co-practice card designed to encourage at-home participation in the program. Families are being invited to share a story from when they were their child’s age or teach a phrase in their home language, helping students celebrate their heritage and strengthen family connections, as well.
The program will conclude with a Future Scholars Showcase in June.
