Dutch Broadway School Partners with Henry Viscardi School for Annual Disability Awareness Day

Dutch Broadway School recently hosted its annual Disability Awareness Day on Sept. 30, organized by physical education teacher Debra Bennett, continuing a longstanding partnership with the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson that helps foster empathy, inclusion and understanding among students.
Scholars in grades 4-6 participated in grade-level assemblies featuring special guests from the Viscardi Ambassadors Disability Awareness Program, teacher Joe Slaninka and students Lauren and Adryana. During the presentations, the guests shared their day-to-day experiences, discussed the challenges they encounter and answered students’ thoughtful questions. The program provided meaningful character education opportunities while encouraging students to develop a greater appreciation for different abilities and perspectives.
“At Dutch Broadway, we’re very much about academics, but we’re also about developing the whole child through character education,” Assistant Principal Brendan Alfieri said. “We want our students to leave here with a positive mindset and a deeper understanding of diversity, inclusion, and the importance of treating others with kindness and respect.”
Following the assemblies, the guests enjoyed lunch generously donated by Salvatore’s of Elmont. Two sixth-grade students, specially selected by Ms. Bennett, joined the visitors for lunch and assisted in serving pizza and refreshments, further strengthening the connection between the two school communities.
The collaboration will continue this spring when Dutch Broadway staff reunite with the Henry Viscardi School for the highly anticipated wheelchair basketball game, a tradition that celebrates teamwork, inclusion and mutual respect.
