Covert Avenue School Sixth Graders ‘Blast Off’ Into Science on National Baking Soda Bottle Rocket

Sixth grade classes at Covert Avenue School put their knowledge of science into action as they celebrated National Baking Soda Bottle Rocket Day on Oct. 8, with a hands-on activity connected to their unit on matter and chemical reactions.
Working in teams, the scholars designed and constructed their own bottle rockets using recycled soda bottles and construction paper. After decorating their rockets, they headed outside to the school yard for an exciting launch event.
To power the rockets, students combined baking soda and vinegar inside the bottles with a coffee filter, creating a chemical reaction that produced carbon dioxide gas. As pressure built up, the rockets launched into the air, providing a memorable demonstration of scientific concepts they had been studying in class.
The activity reinforced lessons on matter and chemical reactions while encouraging teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. As students watched their creations soar skyward, they gained a firsthand understanding of how chemical reactions can produce force and motion.
The engaging experience brought classroom learning to life and gave students an opportunity to explore science through experimentation and discovery.
