On January 17, Gotham Avenue School hosted its annual Peace and Love March along with assemblies to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event is organized and led each year by teacher Arielle Parisi.
The day commenced with a student-led march for peace, love, and positivity. Students carried hand-crafted signs and walked together down the main hallway and along the school's front sidewalk.
Following the march, three assemblies were held in the gymnasium to showcase performances by each grade. The songs chosen for the occasion were joyful, energetic and shared messages of love and acceptance.
The first assembly showcased the talents of the youngest scholars. The performances began with scholars singing “Rise Up,” followed by pre-K singing the “Martin Luther King” song and kindergartners performing “You-Nique.”
The performances continued with the second assembly, featuring scholars in grades 1-3. First graders performed “Everyday People,” second graders sang the timeless “Lean on Me,” and third graders wrapped up the segment with the soulful “Love Train.”
The final assembly starred scholars in grades 4-6. Fourth graders energized the audience with “Try Everything,” fifth graders performed “I Believe in the Dream,” and sixth graders concluded the performances with the inspiring “Live More and Love More.”
The celebration of Dr. King’s legacy continued in the classrooms, where students read books and engaged in projects focused on his life and impact.
