On June 12, the Elmont Union Free School District celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of five sixth grade Science Research scholars from Dutch Broadway School, who were recognized as winners in this year’s New York State Science and Engineering Fair, which was held at the Jamaica Avenue School in Plainview, on April 29. Guided under the direction of Dutch Broadway Science Research adviser Randee Iafrate, Terence Brew, Teddyanne Calixte and Samantha Ortiz earned first place in the Medicine and Health category for their research project, “The Effect of Sodium Chloride on the Heart Rate of Daphnia magna.” Usman Sheikh and Davyon Walker received second place in the same category for their project, “The Effect of Curcuma longa on the Regeneration Rate of Lumbriculus variegatus.” Each scholar was honored with a trophy by NYSSEF in recognition of their excellence in scientific research and inquiry.
